Cruisin' the Archive - Fat Maw Rooney

I've seen these guys a few times opening up for The Big Wu alongside my hometown heroes in Stealin' Strings and I always come away impressed. This show sounds great, and if you're interested in hearing some blues mixed with extended jams and funks this is definately a great download to start off your week.

Another great performance brought to you by Medeski Martin & Wood on KCRW. I recently popped in MMW's "End of the World Party (Just in Case)" while I was working the other night and just had to get some more of them. Well, I found them playing on Morning Becomes Eclectic and thought I'd share.

Cruisin' the Archive - Soulive

I was checking out the Live Music Archive the other night searching for another great show to post, and I heard this show from Soulive. Previously, I haven't really covered Soulive but this 3 piece definitely caught my ear and I've been enjoying their funky rock music with also adding a mixture of soul and jazz music. This show is from this past April at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. This show is a pretty good recording that features a few covers including appearances by a Phish & Chips favorite in Grace Potter and Reggie Watts.

Before the Music Dies

I was sent a copy of Before the Music Dies a few weeks ago so I thought I'd share it with you. Before the Music Dies concentrates mostly on how music is becoming repetitive and packaged together just like everything else we purchase in today's society. Filmmakers Joel Rasmussen and Andrew Shapter capture music and musicians at their heart and soul with interviews and performances from artists such as QuestLove, Dave Matthews, My Morning Jacket, and Calexico to just name a few. I've included the trailer for your enjoyment. For more information please visit their website.

Back Forty

What do you get when you mix soul and funk with a little experimental rock? You get a band out of Ann Arbor called Back Forty. In my opinion bringing the band to what they are is their rocking fiddle player in Colin Murphy. These guys may not be from my favorite place in the world (I'm a Notre Dame fan), but they sure can mix bluegrass with a funk and soul that everybody needs.
