Best of 2005

Four more hours until the ball drops and 2005 and I would like to take the time and reflect on the past twelve months. Graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was probably th biggest accomplishment personally, but I was exposed to a lot more music then I ever have been in my life. I started this blog for a place where I could post my radio show setlists, little did I know that I would be posting almost everyday. I don't even think I ever saw a blog until eight months ago, but here I am in December giving my Best Of 2005 list....

Best Live Show - The White Stripes - September 8 - The Rave
After years of listening to their albums, and live music I finally got to see Jack and Meg live at The Rave. School had just started, and I was still wearing off my Summer hangover. I would have to give String Cheese Incident's BIG Summer Classic performance live from Summerfest a close second, but the White Stripes blew me away.

Best Festival - 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota
I attended 10KLF for the first time this year, and it won't be the last. The lineup was great including the Black Crowes, Widespread Panic, and I finally caught the highly talked about Sound Tribe Sector 9. I remember hearing a lot about STS9 before heading to the festival, but once again this was my favorite act of the festival. I also got to hear MOFRO, Particle, and Les Claypool for the first time.

The Top 5 Albums of 05 (the short list)

Sound Tribe Sector 9 - Artifact

My Morning Jacket - Z

New Monsoon - The Sound

Lotus - Nomad

and finally....Spoon - Gimme Fiction (its the odd one of the bunch, but I'm hooked)

Drink of the Year: Apple Pie
....I'm serious! While writing this post, I got handed a bottle with this wonderful drink....The explanation is apple juice, apple cider, boil it, and then add cinnamon sticks, mix in the everclear and let sit for a day or so....so good!

Old SNL Skit

After the hilarious Chronicles of Narnia skit on SNL I was wasting sometime on youtube.com and found a good skit with Phish. SNL performances by Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz are always a good way to start off the holiday season. Al Gore also makes an appearance as Professor Ralph Wormley Curtis.

Taste of Cheese (Wisconsin Exposure 1 of 5)

The Northwoods Band was formed in August of 2004 and have been performing mainly in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sharing the stage with Fat Mat Maw Rooney, Stealin' Strings, Natty Nation and The Big Wu is common for the Northwoods Band on any given performance.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to see the Northwoods Band live as of yet but that will be changing shortly. On any given evening the Northwoods Band brings 2-4 hours of original material that crosses through all ends of the musical rollercoaster.

The band is made up of Jake Ilika (lead guitar and vocals), Joel Ward (rhythm guitar and lead vocals), Ben Asseff (bass and vocals), and Charles Smyrk (drums and percussion).

Upcoming Performances

Mar. 10 - The Terminal - Minneapolis, MN
April 28 - Kathy's Pub - Rochester, MN

They have plans to release their first studio album in April.

Some Grooves:
Who Turned Out Your Lights>Goulash
James

This will begin a small series of five posts detailing a band out of the Cheese Capitol of the USA.

Snowball Winter Festival

WookieFoot presents the Snowball Winter Festival at Lutsen Mountains in Minnesota. Six bands in three nights with lots of things to such as snowboarding, skiing, snow volleyball, outdoor BBQ, and by far the best part a beer tasting event. WookieFoot along with Trampled by Turles, God Johnson, Fat Maw Rooney, White Iron Band, and Gypsyfoot will perform. For more information head over to the official site.

Trey sets New Years Agenda

Trey will join friends the Black Crowes and the North Mississippi All Stars for a New Years show in NYC at Madison Square Garden. Originally, My Morning Jacket was to fill the 90 minute spot, but due to health reasons had to cancel. Apparently, there is a lot of tickets left and tickets are going for $45 - $65.

Anyone else find this a weird lineup for New Years?

And if you didn't hear the news Bob Dylan will begin DJing for XM Satellite Radio. His show will begin in March on the Deep Tracks channel. Now my decision between XM and Sirius just got a bit more rockier.

In a Minute I'll Be Free

Friday night marked the last time Phish & Chips would exist as a radio show on WSUW. This was a listener appreciation day as Charlie and I did our favorite show of the year with the Phish jukebox. I'd like to thank all the callers for making my job easy (for the most part) and requesting the songs.

Here is the setlist from Friday night:

Split Open & Melt
Andy Griffith Theme

Cars Trucks Buses
Access Me
Squirming Coil
Tube
Dinner and a Movie
Chalkdust Torture>Slave to the Traffic Light>Chalkdust Torture
Bittersweet Motel
AC/DC Bag
The Sloth
Lizards
Moma Dance
Psycho Killer
Bouncin' Around the Room
The Divided Sky> Mike's Song
Cities
Dirt
Birds of a Feather
Character Zero

Silent in the Morning
Makisupa Policeman

Guyute
Walk Away

And as the final music played on Phish & Chips I was able to play my favorite album of all time...Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 4 Way Street. I've always enjoyed this album after hearing it and decided hey its the last show and I'm playing a side from it.

My World Begins to Spin

Two more shows to go for "Phish & Chips" on WSUW and tomorrow being the last entire set of Phish music ever on the program well at least until next semester when a new host is announced. I've waited 2 years now and finally I believe its time to play my favorite Phish show... April 5, 1998...the Island tour...from the Providence Civic Center in the smallest state Rhode Island. A review is linked below.

Phish.net Review

I'm a little late of this but wow!
Anti-Trey graffiti? This is crazy, some idiot spray painted "Fuck you Trey", "Fuck the Lizards", "Here's your fucking helping friendly book", "Fuck Wilson", "Fuck Aaron Wolfe" were just a few of the slogans. These slogans were spray painted at the venue of Trey's 11/17 Albany show....why?

TUNE IN TONIGHT at 6PM CST.... Stream Phish & Chips here!
